”Recycling’s out. That was yesterday. Now it’s upcycling”, writes Berlin magazine Mitteschön in the latest (April) issue. The purpose of the story is how fashion labels like internationally noted Schmidttakahashi are increasingly using old clothes to make new smarter ones.
During the Berlin Fashion Week there are now five sustainable fashion shows, writes Mitteschön, and connects this upcycling trend with one of our favourites in Köp dig fri! – Michiel Schwarz and Joost Elffers book and manifesto Sustainism is the new modernism. Here the authors launch the term sustainism and declare the dawn of a new cultural era: a world that is more connected, more localist, more digital and more sustainable. Schwarz & Joost also replace the classic modernist slogan ”Less is more” with a truly sustainist one – ”Do more with less”. Which is exactly what upcycling fashion designers like Eugenie Schmidt and Mariko Takahashi of Schmidttakahashi are practising, writes Mitteschön. The process of getting more value out of what you already have might seem impossible. But it works.
